The prevention, detection and investigation of fraud requires a body of professionals with a diverse set of skills and experience. Therefore, the ACFI has developed a points based system of determining the minimum education and/or experience required by a CFI/CFT to effectively carry out their duties.
Minimum Total Points Required
Certified Forensic Investigator – A minimum of 60 points is required for certification with a minimum of 15 points attributed to experience and a maximum of 45 points attributed to education.
Certified Forensic Technologist – A minimum of 20 points is required for certification. Designed for graduates of the VIU and Algonquin College programs. Once the graduates reach 60 points, they are eligible to apply for the CFI.
Education Based Points Available
Undergraduate Degree (ie BComm) – 5 points/year of fulltime studies to a maximum of 4 years
Postgraduate Degree (ie MBA) – 5 points/year of fulltime studies to a maximum of 2 year
Diploma – 5 points/year of fulltime studies in a area relevant to fraud to a maximum of 2 year
Professional Certification (ie CPA, CFE) – 10 points per certification to a maximum of 1
Experience Base Points Available
Investigative Experience – 5 points per year of fulltime experience, each of which includes at least 1,000 hours of investigation experience such as fraud auditing, forensic & investigative accounting, fraud investigations, commercial crime, law enforcement.
If an individual is unable to obtain at least 15 Points from experience but is able to obtain a total of 60 Points from education and experience, they would be able meet the requirements for the CFT
